6:05 pm
removing graffiti, and cleaning up litter. >> it's so much easier to work in the daytime. >> reporter: engineers and earthquake inspectors can take all the time they need to check each and every joint including a vast array of seismic monitoring equipment and the giant shock absorbers retro fitted into the bridge after the northridge walk. >> this is a luxury they don't often get. >> reporter: previous closures were successfully used to accelerate maintenance work, but this is by far the most ambitious. >> work continues around the clock as we count down to the opening of the new bay bridge. still to come, the closure of the bridge is prompting many residents to opt for a staycation this holiday weekend. two police shootings in san jose have residents on edge
